    Lightbulb Kernel Upgrade

Well, usually, newer kernels are better.
    Hi Smoge,

I am updating my kernel on my server from version 2.6.9-34.0.1.EL to version 2.6.9-55.EL

It looks like this download .rpm isn't available unless you have a subscription to the Red Hat Network,is this true?

My server is CentOS release 4.5 (Final)
    Linux ip-xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx.ip.secureserver.net 2.6.9-42.0.10.ELsmp #1 SMP Tue Feb 26 11:15:20 EST 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

If you use a control panel like WHM/cPanel - you can do it in there (if kernel is not excluded in your /etc/yum.conf). You can comment out the exclude line with a # and run the upgrade from inside WHM.

You can re-add in the recommend WHM/cPanel excludes with

    Code:
    /scripts/checkyum
or un-comment when you are done.

If you are not using WHM/cPanel, you should investigate the issue more (as, for example, DirectAdmin is one control panel you may break if you do things wrong).

If you are not using a control panel, you can do it with a

    Code:
    yum check-update
and then, if it all looks OK

    Code:
    yum update
    for all...

    or

    Code:
    yum update kernel*
    for just the kernel

then, reboot to load the new kernel.

If you have never done any of this before, you should backup your sites first in case you muck things up.

I split and moved the kernel update stuff here from this original thread.
