Exclamation Cannot Post Reply or add New Topic in Orca Forum with Dolphin

Just recently, my perfectly functioning Orca Forum on my Dolphin site stopped functioning correctly.

    Problem (part 1)
When I try to post a reply to an existing topic (logged in as a Standard User or Admin), upon clicking the 'post reply' link the browser (Firefox) does nothing; in Internet Explorer the same happens, but with the addition of 'Error on page' in the IE status bar -I'll come back to this.

    Problem (part 2)
If I try to start a 'New Topic', until today, the Orca Forum 'LOADING' block appeared at the top of the screen and just remained infinitely (never resolving to anything). Today I have tried 'New Topic' and exactly the same happens as for 'post reply' -nothing!

Now, back to the 'Error on page' messages...

On load of a forum thread page I get the following errors listed via the IE status bar:

    Webpage error details

I did find a post (through Google) by a guy who had the "'tinyMCE' undefined' problem and the same posting problems as me -he apparently solved them:

I had to configure PHP with xslt, and then the problem solved.
I don't understand what this means, can anyone help? I'd be very grateful as this problem is rendering my entire site virtually useless at the moment

    Thanks in advance,

    Phil

    Thumbs up

    Problem solved!

I submitted a support ticket to Host For Web support (HFW is hosting my site) and they solved the problem within 24 hours.

Excellent support from HFW, I recommend them as a host for your Dolphin site -they're a damned sight more dependable than Dolphin itself!!

    Phil.

Maybe it would have been better if HostForWeb had their server configured correctly in the first place.

Sure, they fixed it - but they fixed a screw up they did - by not configuring the server with the required modules.

    Not really anything impressive.

    Fair comment Smoge,

Funnily enough, they (HFW) did offer an immediate migration to another server (which I agreed to [being a bit of a noob to this], but they did not confirm) and the next support guy who contacted me told me the problem I had reported did not exist.

Sure enough when I tested again, it was miraculously fixed! I said thanks and acknowledged that they must have done something as it was just too much of a coincidence that a two week old problem had disappeared within hours of contacting HFW support, but the tech insisted they had done nothing! hmm....

    Kind regards,

    Phil

Default How interesting that I'm having the same issue!

As of 9am today the forums were working just fine. Then the problem you're having appeared a few hours later. I hadn't changed anything to have caused the problem. I emailed my hosting company (TMDHosting) and got a snarky response. They claim the server isn't the problem. But I find it difficult to believe a problem would just manifest for no reason. Are there other solutions or fixes? I'm dead in the water right now, unable to finish building what I need to do.

    Hi Patrick,

I really feel your pain over this one! this has to have been the single biggest "sticking point" I have come across in my Dolphin experience so far.

All I can add is that soon after my last occurence of this anomaly, I realised that I had added a line to one of the site scripts to try to adjust the timezone reflected by by site (the HFW server is set to Chicago, USA time, but my site is focussed on UK residents).

The added code worked, but it seems that soon after users started reporting the 'no post' problem. I was able to post fine, so assumed the problem lay with their setups. However, after I suggested they clear their cache and retry, I did the same -suddenly I had the same 'no post' problem too!

Luckily, HFW were quite helpful (as detailed in my previous post) and offered to migrate my site the first time this happened, but then it happened again and they migrated my site this time too. By the third time it happened, and they had moved my site, I clicked (mentally) that it might be the timezone adjustment code that was having something to do with the problem, so I left well alone this time and it has been fine since.

I realise that this probably has nothing to do at all with your problems, but it was all I could link to the problem as a possible cause.

I hope this helps in some way.

My advice, if all else fails, is move over to Host For Web because even though they aren't perfect either, they are very helpful and respond within 24hrs maximum.

Let me know how you get on, I hope this is fixed soon for you.

    Best regards,

    Phil.

    Exclamation Update

Thanks Phil. My pain is more than you can feel. lol

So TMD insists it's a problem with the software and they claim they can't fix it. But the problem appeared yesterday morning without my having messed with code. I didn't do a timezone mod (although that was on my to-do list to research).

I can't click post or reply on the forums. This happens in both Firefox & IE.

So in Firefox/Firebug, I tried to see what I could find. Bear in mind I am 100% amateur at this, and never did anything like this before 30 days ago, so my learning curve is huge and I envy all of you true programmers.

The error that Firebug gives, when I click is:

    tinyMCE is not defined

Then it gives me the file attribute to that statement, which is in
    forum/js/en/BxForum.js

When I open that, it brings me to line 279, and I can't see ANYTHING wrong with the line.

    if (tinyMCE.activeEditor)
    tinyMCE.activeEditor.remove();

I even reinstalled that particular file, and it still shows up as an error.
On another page, the error mentions a missing ')' but doesn't refer to where that is, so I don't even know how to hunt it down.

I could really use some help, as this has stopped me for over 24 hours now.

    Hi Patrick,

My situation was absolutely identical to yours incidentally; your first three paragraphs read the same for me too.

I also 'located' the problem using Firebug, but was presented with a list of erroneous files which upon inspection (and some Google research!) appeared to be absolutely fine.

It was at this point that I decided two things:
    1. To ask for help from Host For Web Support (to see if they could shed any light on the problem).
    2. That Dolphin seems to be a very buggy setup (I'd had other previous catastrophicproblems which I had not caused!) and that this was the final straw; if this problem was not resolved soon and completely, I would abandon Dolphin all together!

As it happened, HFW saved me by migrating my site!

If I were in your position Patrick, I'd ask my hosting company to migrate my site to another server (hopefully they'll do this free of charge, as did HFW), or failing this, move my site to another hosting company who have more helpful support staff (if this is an option).

I realise these are far from ideal solutions; hopefully someone else on here can help with a more technical solution.

"COME ON MODMYSITE COMMUNITY, WE CAN'T BE THE ONLY TWO WHO HAVE ENCOUNTERED THIS PROBLEM!?"

I wish you all the best and have an uncomfortable feeling that I have not yet seen the back of this problem, for good, myself!
