Question How much is Dolphin really?

Hi, i'm new here but am interested in using Dolphin for a client who is looking for a kind of mini-myspace (the same reason i imagine most are investigating this tech).

So far, i'm quite impressed. I've installed onto my lamp and save video (no ffmpeg on mac) everything seems to work quite well. My only reservations are in licensing and link removal.

My client is interested in purchasing a license (i imagine starting with the 400 day link removal) I'll contact boonex directly but gather they're very lapse in replying to their mail so would like a second opinion from those who have more experience in this area.

So, case in point. Will purchase of the 400 day license for $99 listed here, allow for removal of all references/logos to Boonex from the Dolphin software (including those embedded in flash components)?

Also, what's the deal with extensions? I'm looking at the site and i can see a working music player, shoutbox etc. etc. but when i access the admin panel, check ray plugins, it lists these components as 'uninstalled' yet i can see and use them on the main page? i've equally read that these components are purchase only and not covered by the 400 day license mentioned above? is this true?

What does the 400-day license actually get me?

Apologies if this all seems unnecessarily precise, i'm just trying to tie down exactly what is possible with this software and exactly what you get when you purchase a license. (i'd hate for my client to bite the proverbial bullet, purchase a license and then find that there are still ads/logos on the page and that to use any functionality such as the music/video player, chat components etc. they would have to purchase each component separately).

There's a quite a few comments lurking around like the following which have made me less than eager to jump in (including many that list Boonex as scam artists and affiliates to scam artists):

CodeSucker Barks SEO: Boonex Dolphin CMS

I'd just like to ensure that i get exactly what i need for my purchased license.

Thanks in advance to anyone capable of shedding light here,

    Warm Regards,

    Dave Grant.

    Hi,

Just wondering - what did you try? 7 Beta? 6.1.6?

6.1.6 which i gather is the latest stable release.

I might however wait for 7 to hit the proverbial eShelves before i purchase a license as i've found the flash apps to be unresponsive on many occasions, it appears to be a bug in the onRelease statements as the buttons in the music player, for example, sometimes work and sometimes don't. The consistency of this seems to be erratic and it also affects Boonex's demo site which i find less than encouraging.

I'll demo 7 over the next few days and see how it differs but when do we expect this to hit goldmaster?

Hard to say when the first FINAL will be out... but in general, based on past history, we don't get to excited with that, we wait for the expected FINAL2 and so on... history has shown FINAL4 has been when the code is stable enough for development.

As for ORCA (forum) and RAY (multi-media apps), we usually use something we call CLEAN for developing "serious" sites, which has RAY and ORCA removed. We use other applications in their place.

Will we continue to need to use a CLEAN for 7? Don't know yet - have to see how it plays out.

DOLPHIN is a nice platform for a dating / community / other site (we have used it for many things - customized for customers - from home sales, to fitness club bookings, and many other non-"dating" like applications". We just prefer (up to this point, undecided with 7 at this time) to use other applications in place of RAY and ORCA.

Thanks for the prompt reply smoge.

I'll start looking into using CLEAN in place of 6.1.6

Obviously something like PHPBB is the most apt platform to use in place of ORCA but what do you recommend using in place of the RAY suite?

Are you guys hand-coding your own flash alternatives?
I'm familiar with flash jukeboxes and with flash video players but are there any alternatives available that are already integrated with DOLPHIN's SQL backend?
I can write my own jukebox etc. but i wouldn't know how to go about integrating this with the existing accounts system used in DOLPHIN.

Are there any examples (showcase etc) of people using CLEAN with replacement flash components? Or any recommendations for DOLPHIN compatible flash apps?

Thanks again for your input, this looks like a great platform but documentation seems fairly sparse so your advice is greatly appreciated.

We use 3rd party IM and Chat applications.... there are many out there - and we have integrated several of them for customers. FlashComs, 123FlashChat, others....

For a smaller site, RAY is OK... we just don't support it much (yet, as mentioned, we are waiting to see how Dolphin 7 turns out).

As for 7, you can install the latest Beta, you can find it in http://www.modmysite.com/downloads
