Thread: Independent Consultant program stopped by aeWebworks

Hi Smoge,

Did you know aeWebworks cancelled the Independent Consultant program? Do you know why they did this? This is what they say:

THIS PROGRAM IS CLOSED. ANY PARTICIPANT IS NOT ANY MORE AUTHORIZED TO OFFER SERVICES AND SUPPORT REGARDING AEDATING.

What does that mean? As how I read it they do not want anyone else helping us out now. aeWebworks is really pissing me of now. If they do not want us leaving them for people giving better service they should provide us with it. Seeing they can't then they should not cry now.

I really means nothing... in fact, it saves us the $50 per month that it cost to be a member of the program.

Why did they do this? Maybe they don't like us finding bugs in aeDating, and fixing them.

Or maybe they don't like that ModMySite is censorship free.... people here can say what they want, about what they want, and post links, files, or whatever to backup their opinions.

It will have no effect on here... except that I will edit the posts here (as I find them) that state that ModMySite is a member of the program... since it no longer exists.

Hi,

Sad to hear about this saga. Well, Rob saved his $50 and AED stands to loose professional appeal. Of all people they should know how much contribution MMS has provided in untangling their code and in the process helped their customers.

Perhaps it is legacy of the "closed " society types that much of old russia and old europe has operated from. Hopefully with time, that society will understand and embrace freedom and competition which will bring about best of breed companies and services.

Let the reader understand that this is not a directed insult to AED, just wandering why "would-be-progressive companies" run themselves to the ground for lack of vision.

No relation to Donald R, he was sufficiently blunt to make the point obvious. I was also trying to make a point but really i meant no disrespect to our many german/russian friends at AED and MOD, just that the system has to change for the better of us all. Censorship must first go.

Having said that, however, if lessons are to be learnt from history; companies do not become great because of their inward looking, closed and protectionist attitudes but rather through adopting open and competitive standards. Thankfully, America is a great nation in part because of these guiding principles.

Since I am an American living in China - been here for three years - I have some problems with the cultural differences here.

Maybe some of these things are affecting our relationship with the folks at aeDating. Yes, I know they are not Chinese, but they are from a different culture than many of us.

I have used some words taken from chris cheah's post above.

blunt to make the point obvious

I am very blunt with people - and sometimes others not of my culture do not know how to deal with this. It can make for some uncomfortable situations - as they don't know how to deal with such information, and I am only learning how to deal with people whose culture don't have the same attitude towards being frank and open.

So sometimes, since we both are in "uncharted waters" - the business dealings can get very interesting and convoluted.

Business with people from your own country, and from the same culture as you - is easy, you have almost total understanding of each other.

Business or other relationships with other cultures suffer from a lack of understanding.

Perhaps this is part of the problem.

no disrespect

Face. Loosing Face. So important in some cultures, while in the USA, in business at least, it has a very low importance.

If you screw up - I'm gonna tell you.... If you do a great job (a real achievement)... I'm gonna tell you.

At least in China - there seems to be a block towards giving criticism, or at least if you do give it, you should do it very carefully.

The problem is this... criticism in many foreign cultures equals disrespect, if the person you are criticizing, at least in their opinion, is in a higher than, or equal position with you.

Do you know, in China, you call your employees, translated into English...

Small Wang (Wang = last name / family name)
or
Small Lee
or
Small Zhang

Not Mr. Wang, or use their given name... which is a much more equal footing.. you call them "Small"

You can criticize all you want an employee you call "Small Wang". You are in a higher position, so no disrespect is taken.

But if you try to do it to someone you call by first name, or perhaps "Mr. Wang" - you are asking for trouble

For those people, criticism, in their mind, should come from within, not from an external source, like you.

Criticism means, disrespect.

In many other countries, it means, "getting the job done".

A serious cultural difference.

Maybe this is part of the problem.

Censorship must first go.

Opinions are great... having different opinions with someone is even better... and having the same opinion is the best....

But you can't force someone to have the same opinion.

True, forward reaching conversation, requires, by design, a lack of censorship.

Example: The word "orange" is censored. You can not use it. But I can, because I am in control. So I will ask you a question.

Question: What color is the fruit with the name "orange"? Please answer the question - but please remember, you can not use the word "orange" in your answer, as it is censored.

I think you will find that censorship results in inefficient conversations.

Let me give this a shot....

"The color of the fruit with the name 'orange' is egnaro" (spelt in reverse), that's easy Rob ! Could it be that in the kingdom of K, orange is used for the colored fruit by people supposedly in authorityand egnaro is to be used by non politbureau subjects ? Any of our Kyrgyzstan friends care to confirm this?

Remember George Orwells Animal Farm?, "All men are equal but some men are more equal than others... "

But i hear you.... (coming from Chinese descent but having lived abroad for many years, finally taking up American citizenship in the last 10 yrs). Particularly in China, culturally sensitive issues like "saving face" and "disrespect" etc. have little meaning here but is clearly considered important in many business relationships over there. Hard for most westerners to comprehend. To add to the confusion, a yes could also mean a no and vice versa.

Ah, for the enigmas of culture and civilization.
