Thread: Membership level?

Hi, I'm new to this site and fairly new to Dolphin aswell. Is there a way to allow new users to pick a membership level/account when they first join... that is also publicly displayed on their profiles? Like how youtube has "director" accounts, etc. but having multiple different kinds. If this question has already been answered could someone please link me? =]

Is this an actual membership level - where they need to make a payment / checkout?

Or just a status / tag?

That's what I'm not too sure about. If a membership level is what determines payment then no (although maybe in the future), I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a membership level. I'm not sure what you mean by status/tag but by the way it sounds, that is probably what I'm looking for. Basically, a way for a member to pick from a genre/category when they are first signing up... that would somehow trigger a graphic or particular text that is displayed on their profile that indicates which the genre they picked during sign up.
For a better example: Say I had a website that had the goal of networking people involved in music. At the time of registration the member would pick which category they belong to, "singer" "guitarist" "bassist" "drummer" etc. So when they have their profile, some sort of graphic or text is displayed on their profile that shows which category they picked when first signing up. That way members who are looking for a singer to complete their band can easily determine whether the person is a musician or a singer or vice versa. Hopefully that makes sense =\

Right - that's what I thought - so you can make a new Profile field, and let them select it on join... then show this info in their profile, or allow searching.

If you need to ask different profile questions, allow for the profile edit page to allow editing fields specific to a user type, and be able to show specific profile fields for a user type - we have a mod called "join_type" that does this... it splits users up on a higher level.... beyond gender or membership level... and controls the profile fields they have available to them (or they are asked to complete) and what is shown on their profile view.

For example:

Join_Type = Buyer
How much are you willing to spend on a house?

Join_Type = Seller
How much does your house cost?

Only the questions that make sense are asked... and shown.

Can be used for gender specific questions also on a hook up site.

Join_Type = Male
How big is your penis?

Join_Type = Female
How big are your breasts?

In your case...

Join_Type = Director
How many movies have you directed in the past?

Join_Type = Actress
How many movies have you appeared in the past?

If you need just a simple indicator of what type they are, and allow search - then just a simple profile field will do.

If you need to control what profile fields a type has tied to their profile - and so on - then the join type mod is the answer.

Join_Type is one of our commercial modifications - we use it on many of the custom sites we work on for the reasons I stated in previous posts in this thread.
