    Default Forum/DB Question

    For my understanding:

    - The profiles of my dolphin site are only available for paying members, that means everyone who wants to sign up to my site has to pay !

    - On the other site, the visitors of my dolphin site are able to view the profiles without any restriction.

Now i'm planning to integrate a forum (phpbb or vbulletin) into my dolphin site by using the forum modules. So when the installation is finished, all my paying members are able to use the forum with their dolphin username and password. My question now is, if i don't disable the sign up functionality of the forum, what happens if a visitor signs up to the forum ? Will he be able to login into dolphin with his forum username and password ?

My idea is, that my dolphin members are able to use dolphin and the forum with their login, but also give the visitors the possibility to just sign up and use the forum.

I hope this is understandable, sorry for my bad english ?!

what I have done in the past when wanting to accomplish this..... and the integration was working smoothly..... and the members could autologin via their member's area...... Is I removed the "register" and "login" buttons from the forum.

    Thanks,
    Ann

In phpbb you can carry out a mod to disable member registrations. There is a link for it here on modmysite (just search for it) or you can find it on the phpbb site.

If you do this mod, users will not be able to log into phpbb, they will have to log into your main site to get access to the forum. If you don't do this mod, users will be able to sign up to your forum but they will have to ALSO sign in to the main site. It sounds like you want 2 categories of member, ie, those who can sign in to the forum only, and those who can sign in to the main site and then also use the forum. Maybe you really should just need a stand-alone forum?!

Not sure about Vbulletin but it is probably more configurable than phpbb.

    That's exactly what i want !!!
Just to be safe ........ the member who just signs up to the forum has no kind of access / no chance to login to the main site ?

    Thanks for your help !!!

If you do not disable registrations on phpbb, then I think ALL your visitors/members will have to sign into the forum independently of the main site. In this case I'm not sure how you can allow the members of the main site to access the forum without logging in separately to phpbb (although it's not clear whether you would want to do this anyway).

Having two categories of member is not really a very good way of running things! To do it, I guess you would have to apply a modified "disable registrations" mod to phpbb so that registrations were disabled only for those users who are members of your main site. But then what would happen when a visitor who has joined only the forum wants to later join the main site?

The phpbb database tables are completely separate to the Dolphin tables, even if they are in the same database, so just being a member of the forum would not allow access to the main site.

That sounds good ! Perhaps this looks a little crazy, but because my site will never be a dating site, this is exactly what i want !
So i can start to install a forum and make many, many changes! Let's see if it is a good idea or not

    Thanks!!!

Yes - the phpbb.aemodule is (as currently coded) one way - from dating site to phpbb.

Someone joining phpBB will not have access on the dating site.

If you don't have the "disable registration mod" installed in phpBB - however, you may run into problems running phpbb.aemodule as the ID number in phpBB and the ID number in aeDating may conflict.

Milage will very depending on your dolphin / aedating version - as the module code is different between the various releases.

Hi, if anyone can help, I have the disable reg mod on my phpbb, but when I set the board to disabled, it wont stick. It says changes have been accepted, but when I go back it is as if I didn't disable it. As a result I'm having spammers join the board and I can't tell how they are doing it because my registration link goes straight to my gpldate join form. Is there another way I can stop them?
