Do you have a live dolphin 7 site ?
Do you know of any good sites out there using Dolphin 7?
Do you know of a site that has more than 500 members? (most of the ones I've seen have less than 20 members????)

We support many sites with 10K+ members... with the largest site we support having ~650K users... with sales of 15K USD a day (plus re-occurring)... but I need to tell you - all of them run Dolphin 5.x or Dolphin 6.x... no Dolphin 7.x sites with those numbers yet. A couple run aeDating 4.x still. Nobody runs aeDating 3.x anymore.
The ~650K users, with the 15K USD +/- sales a day, runs a highly modified Dolphin 5.6.5
Sorry - can't give you URL's, we have implied and implicit NDA's (Non-Disclosure Agreements) with all of our customers.
You need to take my word for it.. if you so choose.

Wow that's alot of users and cash to be making a day from one site...I want a site like that
So which dolphin version do you say is the best and most stable 5x, 6x or 7?
Yes - and has been pulling in this cash for more than a year now.... prior to that, was in the 5K a day range, but now has reached more of a "critical mass".
They are all the same... but the earlier versions are perhaps easier to code/modify - a bit less complicated (less OOP) to understand the code.
In any case, to support a huge amount of users, many SQL and other modifications are needed.... one being, the 32K user limit issue (it is a file system issue), which we have a fix for.
Another interesting note: The 450K user site, the database servers have 72GB of RAM, tables have been converted to INNODB, and when fully warmed up, mySQL uses 64GB of RAM for table/query/etc caches.
We do about 2000 (+/-) mySQL transactions a second on those servers.

2000 trans a sec...hectic
Well If I ever get a dolphin site as hot as that one, Ill just have to get you to run it for meI dont suppose your service come cheap but if its making that kind of cash it wont matter n e ways .hehe
the 32K user limit is hardly a limit in my case though.
So getting back to your original question.... if you will be doing the coding yourself... then the older the dolphin version, the easier the coding - if you are not an experience coder.
5.6.5 would be a good choice, if you want to do coding yourself, and you are a beginner to intermediate coder. Almost no OOP, everything is pretty easy to understand.
6.1.6, is a bit harder to code in... most beginners will have problems with some of the OOP in 6 that was started to be used.
7.x - has much more OOP and more complex, and for anything but the most basic modifications, requires at least intermediate php expertise, and advanced, to modify some of the more complex functions.

yea, im new to all this php stuff and dolphin 7 is a real ass ache for me. but im learning as i go. right now im just trying to make some simple changes to the site and some are proving quite difficult.
Im using the firebug add-on to find out where everything is, without firebug it would be practically impossible, that helps a lot
